In ESCAPE TO LOVE, Alice Wootson departs from her usual warm and fuzzy romance for a bit of action and suspense.

Angela Baring is a college student working for a local brewery. Staying late one night, she is forced to return to the office to retrieve some important research material. That's when she witnesses her boss' murder. Angela manages to escape the assailant and becomes the key witness to the murder as well as to a major money-laundering effort with organized-crime ties.

The romance in this story, between Angela and the detective working on her case, is top-notch. However, the suspense touches feel a bit contrived, and hinder the plot rather than helping it. (Jun., 280 pp., $6.99)
