The middle chapter of the Mark of the Vampire trilogy lays out more details of Wright’s alternate reality. Treachery and deceit are brewing within the vampire Eternal Order, giving this story a hard edge. Gentle emotions are not for the Roman brothers, as their destined mates are fated to learn. Complex and riveting!

Nicholas Roman is determined to save his brother Lucien from the dire fate of being a breeding male, so he is reluctantly cooperating with the Order. But as their father was a breeding male, one of them could carry the gene. Female vampire Kate Everborne has been serving time in a vampire prison. Her sentence is almost up when she witnesses impure vampire Ethan Dare murder a female vampire. The dying woman begs Kate to take her son Ladd to his pure-blood vampire father, Nicholas. Kate complies, but she is soon in the middle of the battle between the Roman brothers and Ethan Dare. (SIGNET ECLIPSE, Apr., 384 pp., $7.99)
