Last year’s Rise of the Poison Moon completed the original Jennifer Scales series, so this new novel switches focus to Jennifer’s hybrid half-sister Evangelina. Davidson and Alongi do an excellent job throwing twists and turns into a story where nothing is as it first appears. Regrettably though, despite the title, Evangelina plays a supporting role in this drama and is mainly viewed through flashbacks.
Detective Lue Vue knew he saw something very strange leaving the scene of a murder, but he is not about to admit it. Then the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension sends in Lt. Art McMahon to help with a series of connected killings. As Lue and Art start investigating, they begin to hear talk of a super-secret regiment that hunts monsters. Even the FBI gets involved when they send in Agent Mercy March as part of the hunt for the mysterious Evangelina — their prime suspect. Is Evangelina a cold-blooded killer, or is there more here than meets the eye? (ACE, Sep., 304 pp., $7.99, ISBN: 9780441020799, PB, 14 & Up)
