This is a perfect read for a lazy day, a vacation without leaving home. The interesting, unusual setting of a small village in Wales works well with Bowen's cozy style. Police detective protagonist Evan Evans is delightfully subtle and subversively smart.

When a girl goes missing, Evans splits his time between working the case and digging up an old water line on his mountain property. When he unearths a girl bearing a striking resemblance to the one missing, he thinks there's a connection. Worse, he knows the buried girl—an old playmate who disappeared 25 years ago.

As Evans tracks these two mysteries, the delightfully meandering pace remains steady. With sharp writing and intriguing characters, Bowen keeps the reader amused and puzzled until the end. (Apr., 272 pp., $23.95)
