This series is off to an explosive start — literally. The “you betrayed me” trope is a winner here; Eve and Zane have buckets full of unresolved sexual — and personal — tension. Best of all, Naughton strikes the perfect balance between romance and suspense and nicely sets up a series continuation without sacrificing time with her main characters. Readers may figure out who the bad guy is a little too early, but they won’t mind at all.
Eve Wolfe is walking a very fine line. She has a job to do, but the people involved have taken her sister. When a van explodes right after she’s met with her contact, she’s dragged away by former CIA coworker, Zane Archer. But Zane still wants her to pay for making him fall for her and sabotaging a kidnap rescue operation that left the principal — and some of his men — dead. They soon discover there’s more linking them than their past, and hiding out together is bringing up old feelings. (MONTLAKE, Jul., 330 pp., $12.95)
