McKay creates a vivid world in her interesting series starter. You’ll be quickly sucked in, even as you’re struck by the stark hopelessness. While the romance is mildly disappointing, McKay’s phenomenally crafted characters — the true highlight of the book — will keep you waiting for the sequel.

A virus has turned ordinary people into mindless Ticks, who crave blood — teen blood most of all. To protect them, the government sets up “farms” for everyone under 18. Lily and her autistic twin, Mel, have realized they are not really locked up for their own protection. With days left until their 18th birthday, Lily decides they must escape. Carter — a boy from Lily’s past — shows up, claiming to be there to help. Soon they’re on a dangerous journey — one that will end with a sacrifice.
