THE FARMER TAKES A WIFE
As a favor to a friend, Dr. Maggie Tremont drives a medical van into an unfamiliar rural area. Lost and ill, Maggie winds up in tiny Primrose while she recovers. Afterward, she stays to care for the locals and enlists farmer Rafe Burnside as a guide. Badly hurt by his ex-wife, Rafe still can't resist Maggie, who's also feeling left out of life. Their relationship doesn't last, but Maggie decides to stay in Primrose, which could make Rafe rethink his no-strings stance. Barbara Gale's The Farmer Takes a Wife (3) has many strengths -- plot and humor particularly. But Rafe's hermitlike behavior wears thin very quickly.
