FAST BREAK

With professional basketball as the backdrop, Fast Break could have been an exciting, fast-paced romance, but the character development is spotty. And while there’s an emphasis on winning, there’s no background on how Marc gets the disparate team members to work together. They just begin to change, win and grow up without the reader ever seeing how he achieves these miracles. Hopefully this will be explored in future books in this series. Meanwhile, the enjoyable romance is built on a good foundation.

Former WNBA star Jaclyn Jones has one goal — save the team her grandfather founded and loved. Unfortunately, her partners have no desire to help her. Enter DeMarcus Guinn as the new head coach of the Brooklyn Monarchs. A former All-Star, Olympic gold medalist and NBA MVP, Marc is short on only one thing: experience. Jaclyn is furious at her partners’ move but eventually comes around when she realizes that she and Marc have the same goal. (DAFINA, Jun., 344 pp., $6.99)
