The words "gritty" and "deadly" just scratch the surface of this dynamite debut novel. From the opening page, death, destruction and betrayal weave through a Byzantine plot. Nathan McBride is a truly memorable protagonist whose sense of honor and loyalty take him down dark paths. The breakneck pace and pulse-pounding action herald the arrival of a major new find.

Ex-Marine sniper and former CIA operative Nathan and his friend Harvey Fontana have a security firm. But it's their old specialized skills and ability to break the rules that prompt an urgent call from a former FBI director. Frank Ortega's grandson has disappeared during an undercover arms-smuggling operation for the FBI. Also missing is a large amount of Semtex explosives.

As Nathan and Harvey help the FBI search for James Ortega and the explosives, the ruthless Bridgestone brothers send a violent message to the FBI, and Nathan suspects that he may not have been given all the pertinent facts in this case. (LEISURE, Sep., 384 pp., $7.99)
