Things have gone from bad to worse for Mattie Hart. Jake, her husband of 15 years, leaves her for his latest lover, and a minor car accident puts Mattie in the hospital. Blood tests reveal that she has a life-threatening illness. Now everything is different.

Feeling tremendous guilt, Jake moves back in to help care for her and their teenage daughter, Kim. Mattie wants to live life to the fullest and doesn't know if she should include a man who doesn't love her.

However, as Jake pretends to be the good husband and father, he realizes he likes the man hes become and he also, for the first time, falls deeply in love with his wife.
