Jones captures the overwhelming beauty of an underdeveloped country and creates fascinating characters in this stunning follow-up to last year's The Lighthorseman. The action, adventure, humor, romance and interesting subplots provide something for all.

Paul Campbell senses fear and passion in his passenger, Dr. Helen Stanwood, as they depart in his biplane to the wilds of inner Australia to minister to those in need. Her skills as a doctor win the trust of townspeople and aborigines, but Paul's attempts at seduction fail.

Helen fears he could never love a modern, free-spirited woman, while Paul tries to convince her she's just what he needs. He whisks her away to propose, but his plane crashes. Together, they fight desert, dingoes and danger but still take different paths. Will their love bring them together? (Medallion, Sep., 350 pp., $7.99)
