This light, quick, sexy, fun read delights readers looking for a story to pass the time. Cornick has written everything from dark and deep to short and sweet; Forbidden falls somewhere in the middle. Fans seeking in-depth characters, or a less predictable plot, will still be charmed by this appealing and pleasant next installment in Cornick’s Scandalous Women of the Ton series.

Margery Mallon is a ladies’ maid whose only dream is to open a confectioner’s shop. She has no desire to have her life complicated by a gentleman until she encounters Henry Ward in a brothel. Henry has been asked by the aging Lord Templemore to investigate rumors that Margery is his long-lost granddaughter and heir. Henry finds Margery beguiling and isn’t above a little seduction. When he finally reveals that he is Lord Ward-eaux and she Lady Marguerite, she is shocked by his deception. She has been falling in love with him from their first kiss. When the ton turns against her, and a dangerous foe makes a move against her, Margery must place her trust and her heart in Henry’s hands. (HQN, Sep., 281 pp., $7.99)
