Sydney Tanner has always been something of a loner. As a graduate student struggled to make ends meet at Howard University, Sydney is determined to complete a genealogy project that will earn her $500. When fellow classmate Gabrielle Hart volunteers to let Sydney trace her family and offers her home for the summer, Sydney reluctantly agrees.

It turns out that Gabrielles family is the Baltimore equivalent of the Kennedys. Sydney pursues her genealogy study much to the dismay of Gabrielles parents. She also falls for politician Marcus Hart.

As Sydney unearths secrets, she finds her life threatened by a member of the very family she is trying to research. She runs, as she has done all her life, and for the first time she has someone there to offer her support and love.

Ms. Winters has written a powerful and affecting story of family. (Feb., 302 pp., $5.99)
