When a bloody bonnet is found next to a dead woman in New Orleans, a former cop treks to Lancaster County to hunt a murder suspect, who turns out to be a vampire. Ellis gets the Amish details right and does a decent job with the paranormal suspense, considering her background in religious fiction. However, she strains readers’ suspension of disbelief with a stereotypical detective. Although it veers dangerously toward parody at times, Ellis turns in a fairly straightforward, sweet romance novel.

Hannah Schmidt has never forgotten Jacob Fisher, the boy who saved her from drowning. He is now six feet under … or is he? Levi, Jacob’s brother, is in love with Hannah. When Jacob returns from the dead as a vampire, who will Hannah choose? The fate of her soul hangs in the balance as the brothers try to win her love. Former detective Roc Girouard, visiting Lancaster County to investigate a missing Amish teenager whose body turned up in his native New Orleans, plays the role of reluctant vampire slayer.
