Lee brings the atmosphere of the Georgian era to life with lush descriptions that beg the reader to see, hear, feel and touch it all. She sweeps through a decade, bringing together an older heroine and younger hero in an atypical story. Though the pacing is a bit slow she more than makes up for it with a lively cast of characters and surprising twists and turns that are reminiscent of Fielding’s Tom Jones or Defoe’s Moll Flanders. Though only 20, Philip Drake is a consummate gambler who knows how to keep Lady Luck on his shoulder; at 28, Susannah, Lady Messingham, is a widow facing financial ruin. Though pursued by the Prince of Wales, she wants no man’s protection. She convinces Phillip to teach her how to be a winner at the tables. Susannah considers Phillip a boy, but he has a man’s passion and as they gamble with money they also gamble with their hearts. Over the years they go from teacher and student to friends and lovers, taking unimaginable risks. When Philip must marry, he leaves Susannah to care for his unsuspecting bride. It takes years for them to untangle their lives and realize that what they have is worth the risk of scandal.
