Although her best friend decided to get hitched, it doesn't mean that Kimara needs to link herself to a ball and chain. She's just fine being single, no commitment required. Then she meets Jared Porter. When she encounters the sexy officer in the midst of tragedy she can't stop thinking about him. The feeling is mutual for Jared, but risking his heart to hook up with someone intent on remaining single is not on his agenda.

Free Verse is fresh, funny and fascinating. Breaking from tradition, Shaw develops a free-spirited, independent character with a fiery personality in Kimara. She also delves beneath the sur-face into the psychology of each character's actions. Initially, the chemistry between Kimara and Jared is not very strong, but it increases with time. A pleasant read. (Aug., 287 pp., $5.99)
