GEM OF A GHOST
Genre: Mystery/Suspense/Thriller, Mystery, Amateur Sleuth
Jaffarian’s comic timing, seemingly simple plotting and perfectly pitched dialogue make this entry in the Granny Apples series a complete delight. Layers upon layers unfold as Granny Apples gets to the center of this mystery laden with ghosts, duplicity and romance.
When ultra-rich Joanna Reid demands that Emma Whitecastle get rid of the ghost of her late husband Max, a former action film star who died in a car crash, Emma refuses. But when Joanna says she believes Max killed himself, and his spirit shows up, she says yes. Emma discovers that Max’s daughter, Lainey, has tried suicide a number of times. The only link between the cases is an antique ring passed from Joanna to Max to Lainey. To save a young woman’s life, Emma and Granny Apples have a century-deep mystery on their hands, especially when a vengeful spirit shows up. (MIDNIGHT INK, Feb., 336 pp., $14.95)
