When a blackout strands Tess, Nikki and Kim in an elevator, they get to know one another. Although they have nothing in common, they realize that each would benefit from the removal of one key person in her life.

For Tess, it is her sister, who is behind the raid on her escort biz and the reason she's stuck hiding out in a cheap apartment. Nikki wants to see the boyfriend who let her take the fall for a crime he committed, which put her in prison for 18 months, pay. Kim's husband is her thorn in the flesh—not only does he want a divorce, he's laying claim to the business she built and using blackmail to get it. The three make an unholy pact that could remove these problems forever.

This fascinating story is a page-turner. Even though what these women do is appalling, readers will stay glued to the pages to find out what happens. You may be pulling for them but you'll still sympathize with their victims. In the end, they learn that getting what you wish doesn't always mean you get what you want. (Jun., 224 pp., $19.95)
