Tess Monaghan is back and spunkier than ever. While short, this is a wonderful read. Lippman is really advancing her characters, pushing and challenging them. As always, Tess is a great character with an original and snarky voice. Lippman is an engaging writer, one who is never afraid to take risks and it pays off in The Girl in the Green Raincoat.

As a private investigator, Tess Monaghan is not used to being idle. Now that she is on bed rest, she’s pretty much going out of her mind with boredom. Until she sees a mysterious woman outside her window and begins watching her. One day, the woman’s dog is running loose and Tess becomes convinced that something has happened to the woman. Since Tess is unable to investigate herself, she enlists the help of her boyfriend and friends. The case becomes more complicated and it is up to Tess to make sense of the puzzle pieces coming her way. (MORROW, Jan., 208 pp., $13.99)
