The time had come for Aria, a Maiden Trancer, to become a woman, and it is her Giver's job to make this transformation. However, what she and warrior priest Talon experience together is something both had heard of only in whispers. Now they are joined by their minds, hearts and souls. Even so, Talon must leave, and Aria is forced to bear their son alone. However, an attack on Aria's home at the time of the birthing changes things dramatically. Now Talon and Aria must travel together to rescue their son.

THE GIVEN is a cleverly written story. The plot is well developed, and the world descriptions nicely intertwined with the narrative. The heroine's and hero's evolution on their journey to love and redemption is well depicted. Although there's some bloody violence, it's not gratuitous. Altogether an excellent tale that will have you looking forward to additional installments. (Aug., 256 pp., $13.95)
