Walker turns a tale about rappers, drugs and gangs on its head as he delivers a resounding feel-good romance. When 17-year-old Candace runs away from a life of privilege into the arms of disappointment, betrayal and danger, there’s a fleeting sense of “what’s new?” The author rallies with a calculated pace, heartwrenching and explosive scenes, a potpourri of characters and a surprising, yet gratifying, climax.

Candace follows her rapper boyfriend from New York to Texas. When Rilla’s record deals sour, he resumes dealing. Candace grows tired of his lies, but hers is even bigger; he may not be the father of her unborn child. Tino, a handsome, nerdy Mexican, is smitten with Candace immediately when they meet. Even from jail, Rilla’s choices strangle Candace’s freedom and threaten her baby and her new friend. She has to mature fast to protect those she loves.
