OFF THE GRID
At the end of the previous Monkeewrench novel, Shoot to Thrill, troubled protag Grace McBride made a decision that has had repercussions for the entire crew. Terrorism and vigilantism form bookends to this latest Byzantine and knuckle-biting tale from the awesome Tracy. There is never a dull moment in this terrific, rapid-paced thriller that still manages not to skimp on the character development.
For most of her life, Grace McBride has lived in fear, leaving her unable to relax and enjoy life. Three months after a brutal case, everyone is shocked when Grace agrees to accompany retiring FBI agent John Smith on his sailboat off Florida. She is starting to heal, when the sailboat is attacked by two assassins with a picture of John. Back in Minneapolis, Det. Leo Magozzi and Det. Gino Rolseth are frantically hunting for young girls kidnapped off the Reservation, when they find the kidnappers executed. Grace returns to the Monkeewrench crew with frightening news: Terrorists are after John and some data he collected. Evidence is starting to mount that something big is planned, but can they stay alive and unravel the clues in time? (PUTNAM, Aug., 320 pp., $25.95)
