In book two of The Protectors series, Northcott turns her attention to Stefan while giving readers a peek into Griff and Val’s happily ever after. The contemporary and realistic settings are totally believable, and the author ratchets up the tension between the magical and mundane communities. The action develops slowly, taking off only toward the end, where the hero and heroine are observers rather than participants in the battle action. Mel is almost too stubborn for her own good, but Stefan is worthy of reader commitment.

Special Agent Mel Wray tells herself that, if she had left for Georgia earlier, her friend might still be alive. She won’t leave until the killer is caught and joins forces with the local sheriff. She runs into former lover Dr. Stefan Harper, a member of the Georgia Institute for Paranormal Research. Ostracized as a child for her mother’s abilities, Mel wants nothing to do with Stefan’s world of “energy manipulation.” When ghouls take her and Stefan hostage, Mel accepts the reality of magic and they escape. Mel wants to share her knowledge with law enforcement, but if she does, there could be life-altering consequences. (FOREVER YOURS, Jul., 384 pp., $17.99)
