Like the first two books in the series, this is a fast-paced and entertaining romp with an engaging protagonist in the form of 2000-year-old Atticus O’Sullivan. However, it’s becoming apparent that while Hearne has female characters in his books, they are nothing more than supporting characters, their roles limited to defending the male protagonist or driving getaway cars. This is becoming a pretty serious flaw in an otherwise exciting and entertaining series.

Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, has been recruited by his friend Leif Helgarson to help in a centuries-long quest to kill Thor, the Norse god of thunder. This goes counter to Atticus’ long-term survival strategy of keeping his head down and not attracting attention, but things have been heating up in his current home of Tempe, Ariz., and it looks like he’s going to have to abandon ship. Teaming up with a werewolf, a Russian thunder god, a Finnish shaman and an army of frost giants, they prepare for an epic showdown in Asgard, despite all the warnings and portents that advise against it. Atticus’ life will be changed forever, if he survives. (DEL REY, Jul., 336 pp., $7.99)
