THE HAND-ME-DOWN FAMILY
THE HAND-ME-DOWN FAMILY (4) by Winnie Griggs: California and Sweetgum, Texas, 1888. Callie Johnson Tyler was married by proxy to a man she never met. When she arrives at her new home of Sweetgum, she learns he perished in a fire and that her dead husband's brother, Jack, intends to raise his brother's children by himself. Jack had no idea his brother remarried, and now Callie and Jack must decide how to handle things for the children's sake and to keep the townspeople from whispering. Can two people with big hearts who don't know much about each other have a successful future together? Griggs is a wonderful storyteller. The characters are well written, and even when they're stubborn, the faith message is interwoven throughout.
