HAPPILY EVER MADDER
McAfee’s novel is entertaining, but it alternately drags and speeds along as she both glosses over important events too quickly and adds too much detail to other parts of the story. An abrupt ending also detracts from the breezy fun read it could have been.
Graciela “Ace” Jones leaves her small Mississippi hometown of Bugtussle behind and moves to Pelican Grove, Fla., to live with her fiancé, Mason McKenzie. She is finally going to fulfill her longtime dream of opening an art gallery, and her life seems to be falling into place. She vows to leave her sassy attitude behind in Bugtussle. But no sooner does she unpack than she crosses paths with Mrs. Lenore Kennashaw and her snippy and snarky cronies. Will Ace survive these old ladies and get her happily ever after, or will she be on the way back to Bugtussle? (NAL, Nov., 368 pp., $15.00)
