Calling on her own experiences, reporter turned author Clare adds a realistic edge to her suspenseful writing. The sometimes colliding goals of law enforcement and reporting are vividly on display in this tight, gritty thriller. Still, despite their differing views on the public's right to know, this hero and heroine are in perfect tune when it comes to passion. Clare definitely seems to have found her niche.

Breaking news happens right in front of reporter Tessa Novak when a young Hispanic woman is gunned down before her eyes. Horrified and shaken, Tessa is determined to find out who killed the girl and why. Her only clue is the man she saw lurking around in the aftermath.

For years, undercover FBI agent Julian Darcangelo has been focused on bringing down brutal Russian mafia boss called Burien. At last, he might have found a thread that will allow him to do that. What he doesn't need is a beautiful reporter stepping into the mix. But Tessa is a bulldog, and even after learning that Julian works for the feds, she won't back down from uncovering what she can about the woman's murder. (BERKLEY SENSATION, Oct., 328 pp., $7.99)
