This wonderful story with amazing, layered characters provides a ton of laughs as well as serious moments. Readers of Magnin’s books will not want Harriet’s story to end.

When Harriet Beamer breaks her ankle, her son and his wife want her move in with them. But Harriet will get to California on her own terms; she will only use public transportation and other alternate ways of travel. What follows is the heartwarming, hilarious journey of one woman who feels she has not lived a memorable life. She travels by train, bus, ferry and motorcycle, gaining self-knowledge along the way, as she learns to put her faith into God’s hands and not her family’s. (ZONDERVAN, May, 320 pp., $14.99)
