Dwarves Sophia and Jo- Jo have been an integral part of Estep’s amazing Elemental Assassin series, and for the first time we get a glimpse into Sophia’s dark and tragic past. Estep is one of those rare authors who excels at both action set pieces and layered character development. This one-two punch makes Heart of Venom and all of Estep’s Gin Blanco books unmatched entertainment!

Former assassin Gin Blanco takes her relationships and friendships very seriously, so when Jo-Jo’s salon is attacked, leaving Jo-Jo severely injured and her sister Sophia abducted, an angry Gin plans to unleash the wrath of the “Spider” on the culprits. But first Gin needs information about who did this and why, which will mean exploring twisted and terrifying events from Sophia’s past. Although their romantic relationship has recently been strained, Owen Grayson plans to be right by Gin’s side as she takes on a rescue mission with long odds. It will take planning, guts and luck if they are all going to get out of this alive. (POCKET, Sep., 384 pp., $7.99)
