In Kira Brady’s debut novel, the reader is taken to an apocalyptic Seattle in what is sure to be a fantastic trilogy. Working with a completely unique premise, Brady blends mythologies and paranormal elements from different cultures, making Hearts of Darkness a bit of a challenge to keep up with, but all falls into place soon enough. In the world Brady brings to life, the characters are fresh and exciting, and the story is fascinating. Dragons and shapeshifters will never look the same. I’m eagerly awaiting the second book in this promising new series.

Kayla Friday lives in a place of fragmented memories and chilling darkness. Her sister’s grisly murder remains unsolved, and tracing the only clue involves confronting an ancient battle, an impossibly sexy werewolf and awakened desires. A mercenary, Hart, needs to free what’s left of his soul, but the uncontrollable passion he unleashes with Kayla could put their new bond to the ultimate test. (ZEBRA, Aug., 352 pp., $6.99)
