There’s nothing cozy about this latest entry in the Daisy Dalrymple series. Instead it’s a delightful thrill ride of family greed, embroidered with Gatsby-esque details of wealth and the gentry. It’s a charming, wickedly smart read.

Daisy Dalrymple is called on by her cousin Edgar, Lord Dalrymple, to help select an heir to the viscountcy. They find four candidates and Edgar invites them to the family home, Fairacres, along with Daisy and her family. This gives Daisy and the family solicitor time to investigate the claimants: a hotel owner from Scarborough, a South African diamond merchant, a young boy from Trinidad and a sailor with a pregnant wife. But when the young sailor goes missing and accidents befall the household, Daisy and her husband, Alec, must sort out who among the guests was planning to eliminate anyone standing in the way of the inheritance.
