The conclusion to Rivers’ two-book saga featuring mothers and daughters is both engrossing and emotionally satisfying. The reader forms an intimate bond with the characters and will come to care what happens to them. The sweeping time period from the 1950s through the present day allows the reader to engage personally in the amazing narrative.

Marta arrives to help her daughter Hildemara’s family while Hildy recuperates from tuberculosis. Marta develops a bond with her granddaughter Carolyn, to the exclusion of Hildy. After Carolyn enters college in the 1960s, a family tragedy causes her to join the hippie movement in San Francisco. Returning home two years later, she is pregnant with nowhere else to turn. Carolyn and her own daughter face struggles that are similar to all of the mothers and daughters in their family history. Can they break the pattern and learn to love without strings?
