The second installment in this delightful series has just as much charm and joy as every other one of Warren’s novels. A bit of It Happened One Night mixed with Scottish atmosphere and engaging characters (including an adorable dog) make this read irresistible.

Princess Mercedes, of Alden, is traveling to London when her coach is attacked. Left on her own, she wanders to the nearest inn, looking so much like a bedraggled urchin that no one will believe her claims of royalty. Major Daniel MacKinnon, a displaced laird, has nowhere to go and feels a kinship with the young woman. When she needs protection and an escort Daniel volunteers. From inn to inn, and trouble to more trouble, they cross Scotland. Though there are dangers, the greatest peril comes when they fall in love. (SIGNET, Nov., 352 pp., $7.99)
