HER LAST BREATH
Castillo’s fifth novel starring chief of police Kate might be her best yet. The story has a tantalizing mystery, the surprises are many, the characters are first-rate and the setting reveals the fascinating world of the Amish. Reading previous titles in the series is not necessary to enjoy this one, but fans will eagerly seek them out after this.
A father and his three children are heading back home to the farm on their wagon when a vehicle slams into them, killing all but one little boy. The widow, a lifelong friend of Kate’s, asks her for help, so Kate investigates even as events from the past begin to haunt her. (Minotaur, Jun., 320 pp., $25.99)
