Elrod has a real gift for gathering great authors and terrific stories for the anthologies she edits. That is certainly true of Hex Appeal, which boasts a stellar cast of nine storytellers providing their take on menacing magic and hazardous hexes!
A sampling of the tasty treats includes: Butcher’s “Bigfoot on Campus” has wizard Harry Dresden working a case that features a precarious mix of Bigfoot, vampires and college students. Andrews provides “Retribution Clause,” a story in the Kate Daniels universe featuring a Frost Giant insurance investigator, and his partner, fulfilling a death clause. Caine’s “Holly’s Balm” picks up with further adventures of Holly Caldwell and Andy Toland, first introduced in the Strange Brew anthology. Green’s tale is “How Do You Feel,” featuring Dead Boy and his 23rd- century sex droid girlfriend Sil on the hunt for the individual who arranged for his murder. There is also Vaughn’s “The Arcane Art of Misdirection,” which has Odysseus Grant investigating dangerous magic in Las Vegas. (ST. MARTIN’S GRIFFIN, Jun., 368 pp., $14.99)
