Graham brings the town of Salem to life with clear details and vivid descriptions. Including information about shop fronts, local residents, Wiccan beliefs and the fearful history that Salem holds gives readers a real sense of having visited there before, very much like a virtual tour. This masterfully created psychological thriller makes discovering the identity of the killer almost impossible until the very end — leaving readers shocked and enthralled. Rocky is an exceptional addition to the Krewe, using his ability to see ghosts as an enhancement to his already sharp eye and keen intelligence. Devin’s knowledge of the area makes her a natural choice for assisting the Krewe and her attraction to Rocky works well within the investigation. The end was a bit abrupt, but it’s exciting to guess what’s next for the Krewe.
Thirteen years ago, Craig Rockwell, otherwise known as Rocky, discovered the body of a local girl in a forest clearing — her body displayed like the five points on a pentagram — and it changed the course of his life. When another woman’s body is found with similarities that match that long ago case, Rocky requests to work with the Krewe of Hunters, a task force responsible for solving “unusual” crimes, each member having a unique skill set that guides him or her. Devin Lyle moved back to Salem when her Aunt Mina died, and discovering a second body near her cabin places her squarely in the center of Rocky’s current investigation. Both can communicate with dead — and it seems that the ghosts are trying to help solve the case, putting together years of history in the process. (MIRA, Aug., 400 pp., $7.99)
