Miller’s new historical series set in the Amana Colonies has amazing characters who are on a journey to discover the past, where they find things they never thought would affect them.

Cincinnati, Ohio, and Amana, Iowa, 1892: Dovie Cates has no intention of joining her father in Texas; she instead travels to the Amana Colonies, where her mother lived. She needs to know why her mother left her family and friends. Dovie meets Berndt, who delivers bread to the kitchen house each morning, and she begins to ask him questions he is not willing to answer. She decides to find answers on her own. Will her decisions bring Berndt closer or will he turn his back on her, as others living in the Amana Colonies have? (BETHANY HOUSE, Sep., 352 pp., $14.99)
