RT Rating

Passion and intrigue collide in the first of an original and steamy new series. Knight mixes emotional conflicts with interesting historic detail and produces a hero whose honor and prowess is memorable indeed. Not enough time is devoted to building trust or tension between the characters in their early scenes together, so later scenes miss a sense of fulfillment. Nevertheless, the spark between them is palpable and powerful, and watching their love grow despite the fear and pressure surrounding them makes for an engaging read.

Lady Arbella de Mowbray has been promised in marriage to an English noble occupying Scotland. Nothing prepares her for the battle she witnesses upon her arrival — or the Highland laird who promises his protection. Magnus Sutherland realizes there is no better way to protect this lovely Englishwoman than to make her his wife. They agree to a marriage in name only, but neither can deny their desire, or the love that soon follows. Will it be enough to survive not only war, but the machinations of those they spurned?
