When Julia Adams takes her son and goes to live with her dead husband's parents, she's not sure what kind of reception to expect. She finds them overbearing and controlling, so Julia moves in with her husband's best friend, Jesse Filmore, a man eaten up with guilt because he believes he caused his best friend's death. Molly O'Keefe's His Best Friend's Baby (3) is loaded with good description. Jesse is well drawn, and his guilt is realistic, as is his fighting his attraction to Julia. But Julia comes off as wishy-washy at times and doesn't evolve into a strong character until late in the story.
