Fans of Woods' Sweet Magnolias series will enjoy catching up with Serenity's denizens and finally having the chance to read Annie and Ty's story. Unfortunately, it's a slight disappointment -- a strong plot and conflict can't compensate for characters who seem immature and self-centered much of the time.

Being home in Serenity is a big adjustment for sports injury therapist Annie Sullivan, even before she finds out her ex-boyfriend, pro baseball player Tyler Townsend, is back too. Injured and with his career in jeopardy, Ty needs Annie's help. But Annie can't forget his betrayal, especially because Ty has sole custody of his 3-year-old son, Trevor -- the result of his relationship-ending fling with a groupie named Dee-Dee.

Ty's determined to win Annie's trust and get her back, and he's just started making some headway when Dee-Dee shows up and throws a wrench in the works. Will Ty be able to convince Annie of his love? (MIRA, Apr., 384 pp., $7.99)
