In the fourth installment of Blackwell’s fun Haunted Home Renovation series, she delves into a shocking murder from the past. This story, with the usual characters as well as some new faces, is fascinating and keeps readers thinking that there is more than meets the eye.

Contractor and amateur ghostbuster Mel Turner is volunteering with Neighbors Together, a local charity that fixes the homes of those in need, and notices spirits in the windows of the house next door. Curious, she learns that the neighborhood kids call it the Murder House since the family that lived there was murdered by the father and only two of the children escaped. When a body turns up in a shed, Mel is compelled to find the cause of death. Will she solve the murder before it’s too late? (OBSIDIAN, Dec., 336 pp., $7.99)
