Book Review

HOW TO BAKE A PERFECT LIFE
by Barbara O'Neal

Genre: Mainstream, General Mainstream Fiction

RT Rating

Interesting characters and a realistic contemporary situation make this an emotionally moving story. O’Neal portrays her teenage character with particular accuracy. Parts of the novel move a bit slowly, especially when old arguments get rehashed. Although true to life, the repeated discussions slow the book’s pace.

Bakery owner Ramona Gallagher becomes the guardian of her daughter Sophia’s teenage stepdaughter, Katie. Katie’s mother has lost custody due to drug addiction, and her father (the pregnant Sophia’s husband) is wounded in combat and hospitalized in Germany. In addition to all this, Ramona must deal with family tensions that have been an issue for the family since Ramona’s accidental pregnancy in her teens. (BANTAM, Jan., 394 pp., $15.00)
