This is another book that seems to be trying too hard. The glimmers of an interesting story are lost among various attempts to be clever, a confusing cast of characters and explicit sex. The violence, unfavorable treatment of women and crude sexual references may not appeal to some readers. Plus, it’s often so convoluted that it’s hard to track whose soul is under contract to which demon, who is attacking whom and who has been brought back to life.

Grace, the granddaughter of a famous witch, summons demon Caspian to help her deal with her violent Russian mobster ex-boyfriend, who also has a powerful demon and a wicked-witch mother at his disposal. More witches, demons and other magical beings — including the devil — enter the fray as competing factions try to gain the upper hand. Amidst the battle, Grace tries to find true love with her gorgeous demon and gain some insight into her ancestry. (BRAVA, Sep., 320 pp., $14.00)
