ad, and deeper than the cover copy suggests, Cotugno’s debut novel is so much more than meets the eye. The alternating “before” and “after” scenes are sometimes jarring, but they up the suspense. The characters’ realistically poor grammar and authentic dialogue make this a convincing, heartrending read that’s hard to put down.

A single teenage parent, practical Reena is coping quite well under the circumstances. But her past is a tangled mess, and when Sawyer, her one-time obsession (and the baby’s father) comes back into town after an inexplicable absence, Reena’s tenuous grip on her life loosens dangerously.
