This is a beautiful, heart-wrenching, and heart-warming story. The internal struggle that heroine Jane faces every day is transitioned flawlessly to an awareness of her own desires without abandoning her past. It is this struggle that brings the reader close to her as she faces her own strengths and weaknesses. The story blends heartache with new beginnings, making Jane an inspiration to the other characters in the book as well as readers. Jane Elliott has lived her entire life to protect the people around her — not an easy feat after growing up with an abusive, alcoholic father. With her father in jail and up for parole, and with her fiancé constantly distancing himself from her, Jane’s sole focus becomes bettering the lives of the underprivileged students she teaches. When one of her students is accepted into an after-school program run by David Casey, Jane sees in David all of the things she is missing in her life.
