Icie Ellis has never forgotten the hateful things Clay Mammoth had said to her the day his father died. She couldn't believe that he'd accuse her of trying to steal money from a man she thought of as a father figure.
Clay Mammoth knew that Icie was nothing but a gold digger. No matter how innocent she claimed to be, he saw her for what she was. Someone not to be trusted. That is, until the day he realizes he needs her help.
With a knee injury threatening to end his football career and after visiting 50 physical therapists with no results, Icie may very well be his last shot. Although accustomed to dealing with children, Icie vows to treat Clay's case with cold detachment. Only she didn't expect her will to be tested by the sparks flying between them.
Despite an interesting premise, there's not much to savor in Ms. Starr's latest attempt. With a relationship between her characters that felt forced instead of fluid, and lugubrious pacing, ICIE left this reviewer cold. (Oct., 321 pp., $8.95)
