Turow’s strange and convoluted plot is surprising and thought-provoking. It provokes with interesting ideas about the relationship between identical twins, while reminding us that things are not always as they seem. Although you may get some inkling of what is going on, there’s enough complexity to keep you guessing until the end. You will be rooting for the odd-matched pair of investigators to find the truth.

Ex-FBI agent Evon Miller and aging PI Tim Brodie are both working for wealthy businessman Hal Kronon. Hal is obsessed with finding out who killed his sister Dita more than 25 years ago, a case Tim handled when chief of homicide. Cass Gianis has just been released from prison, having pled guilty to murdering Dita. Hal is convinced that Paul Gianis, current mayoral candidate and Cass’ identical twin, was in on the murder, and he’s looking for evidence while funding a smear campaign against Paul. Evon and Tim are soon sucked into a maelstrom of conflicting facts, multiple suspects and long-buried secrets. (GRAND CENTRAL, Oct., 416 pp., $28.00)
