The second title focusing on the Wherelockes, a family gifted with many unusual talents, is a well-written, fast-paced Cinderella plotline enhanced by an unforgettably large cast of characters (children and dogs, especially) who come to life through Howell's creative handling of several entwined subplots. A true Howell classic!

Someone wants Lady Penelope Wherlocke out of the way and has her kidnapped and sold to a brothel. Lord Ashton Radmoore's friends have arranged a last fling for him before he is to wed. When he's brought into a darkened room, Penelope recognizes Ashton as her stepsister's suitor. Suddenly her brothers, along with his friends, rush in to rescue her, and Ashton meets her large family.

Intrigued by Penelope, the poor relation who sees ghosts, Ashton decides to uncover who wants to harm her and why anyone would hurt a woman who cares for 10 boys and a stray dog? As his investigation progresses he realizes he's falling in love with her and must find a way out of his engagement. All becomes clear when Penelope's gift and the villain are revealed.
