Burke’s first-class adventure has murder and mayhem wrapped up in an intricate, innovative plot. Gripping from the first page, this story uses her knowledge of the judicial system to give an account that is detailed, yet fast-moving. Character development is stellar and the guilty party will keep readers guessing until the end.

When a stranger rescues a young pickpocket from the subway tracks, she sets off a chain of events that began 10 years ago. Journalist and former ADA McKenna Wright recognizes the woman as Susan Hauptmann, her friend who went off the grid without a trace. Dishonored as a prosecutor, now McKenna’s credentials as a reporter are being questioned as clues are wiped from hard drives and cell phones, and key players from Susan’s life are not forthcoming with information. Even McKenna’s husband stonewalls her. After people start to die, she turns to the FBI and the one cop who has no reason to believe her story. (Harper, Jun., 368 pp., $25.99)
