Book Review

ILL MET IN THE ARENA
by Dave Duncan

Genre: Fantasy, General Fantasy

RT Rating

Duncan is a superb storyteller! His 40th novel is a totally enthralling romantic adventure. The characters seem to live and breathe, especially the charismatic hero, who tells the tale in first person. He grabs your heartstrings on page one and doesn't let go until you discover his fate. The secondary characters are just as brilliant. This is a stand-alone book, but Aureity is such a fascinating world it would be a shame not to revisit it.

In Aureity, women rule with psychic control. Young noblemen compete in gladiatorial contests in the hope of winning the hand of a woman of high rank. Quirt, an unknown and older
competitor, competes against Humate,
a powerful young noble who is meant
to wed Tendence, a woman Quirt can never hope to have. When Quirt wins the match Humate is furious. Now Quirt must gain the boy's trust and make him an ally in his plan of revenge against Humate's family. (TOR, Aug., 304 pp., $24.95)
